Beyond the Limit: The Dream of Sofya Kovalevskaya
Published in Hardcover by Forge (August, 2002)
Author: Joan Spicci
Average review score:

truly compelling!
This is a true piece of art, a compelling love story wrapped into the trials and tribulations of humanity's pursuit of balance with being true to oneself and to those you love. This true story is beautifully told of the tribulations faced by a woman in pursuit of mathematics in a world unaccustomed or accepting of women. I couldn't put it down!

Beyond The Limit
We enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it to all readers who enjoy history. The book captures the struggles of women who persued higher education in a time of world governmental and social change. The romantic twists and turns of the characters are sure to keep the reader's interest from cover to cover.

Brilliant, inspirational, important
I highly recommend this book! From the very first page, the story engages the reader and the writing dazzles. This true story is about the trials and struggles of a brilliant, Russian female mathematician, Sofya Kovalevskaya, in the late 1800s. This was not a popular time to be a woman in Russia, and certainly not popular to be a smart woman -- especially if you wanted to study mathematics! However, the development of mathematics and science in Europe at this time was on fire (as was the politics), and Sofya was right in the thick of it all.

This work of historical fiction is well researched, with information gathered from many sources (including translations of personal letters), and masterfully retold. It's romantic, exciting and fascinating. A true gift to be able to walk these years in Sofya's shoes.

If you've ever struggled against societial prejudices, or struggled to succeed in a field of work not intended for your race, sex or color, you'll find this book an inspiration.

I anxiously await the sequel!

Banking on Privilege: The Politics of Spanish Financial Reform
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (November, 1997)
Author: Sofia A. Perez
Average review score:

An outstanding book about economic and political power
This amazing book focuses on the relationship between the economic power of Spain's largest financial institutions and the political power of successive Spanish governments. It gives an excellent view of how economic power manages to control the three legal powers of the State in modern European democracies. Definitively a must read!!

The best book on the politics of Spanish banking
This book is a great example of social-science research on the politics of financial reform. Although focused on the Spanish banking sector, it makes comparisons with other European countries, especially France. Easily one of the best political analyses of the power of private banks in emerging economies. Highly recommended for those interested in understanding the forthcoming European Economic and Monetary Union of 1999.

The Mathematics of Sonya Kovalevskaya
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (November, 1984)
Author: Roger Cooke
Average review score:

A great book
This is a great book, and a wonderful contribution to both the history of mathematics, and to the explanation of the very mathematics that Kovalevskaya has worked on. We need more such books. I wish Springer would re-issue it in paperback.

I (the author) think it's OK.
It would hardly be fair for me to review my own book. You need an impartial opinion, such as that of my mother, who unfortunately didn't live to see her son become an author; I think she would have liked it, however. As for me, I'm happy to find it's still available after 13 years!

The Religious Potential of the Child: Experiencing Scripture and Liturgy With Young Children
Published in Paperback by Liturgy Training Publications (January, 1993)
Authors: Sofia Cavalletti, Patricia M. Coulter, Julie M. Coulter, and Rebekah Rojcewicz
Average review score:

Changing the Shape of Religious Education!
This book is the cornerstone of a program called the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and it is a new way to tap into the private relationship that children have with God. This book is translated from Italian and requires careful reading, but Sofia Cavelletti's message is profound. In learning how to teach 3-6 year old children using Sofia's method, I have been transformed.

Sofia Cavalletti picks up where Maria Montessori began. We learn about Cultivating the Gift of Wonder, and how to engage children in such a way that they show us who God might be. I encourage every parent who wonders "How do I teach my child about God?" to read this book and to explore this method.

Best approach to Christian education for children I've seen.
Developmentally appropriate, respectful of the child's capabilities, and true to the essentials of Christianity, this approach is a quantum leap above traditional Sunday School stuff. It nurtures the child as well as the teacher, and crosses denominational lines in its effectiveness.

Hearts in the forest
Sofia and the Heartmender, by Marie Olofsdotter. Little Sofia is beset by monsters, but her teacher and parents don't care. Her heart breaks; so does her cat's. But she goes on a quest.... Gorgeous full-page color illustrations. I'm not a kid, and this book makes my heart pound.

Mending Hearts, Mending Souls
THis book may be geared for 4-8 year-olds. However, I loved it just the same! It was like music to my soul...a journey where past and present meet, and unite to make for a peacful future.

The Good Shepherd and the Child: A Joyful Journey
This book was an excellent help to me in planning how I can introduce the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to my religious education class. It is simple to follow and easily explained. I bought a second copy to give to my daughter to use with her daughters ages 3 and 5 to introduce them to the wonder and beauty of the Good Shepherd and the Mass. All around our parish I have been recommending it to parents of preschoolers to help them bring the children into the celebration of Mass but also to help them educate their little ones using the parables of Jesus.

History's Golden Thread: The History of Salvation
Published in Paperback by Liturgy Training Publications (October, 1999)
Authors: Sofia Cavalletti and Rebekah Rojcewicz
Average review score:

Simply presented, clear and insightful religious history
In tracing the history recounted in the Bible, Cavalletti makes use of a traditional method of interpretation - typology (prefiguring) - applied in a systematic way: Christological, sacramental, and ecclesial. This is tradition applied more clearly than I have seen before - and I read a great deal of material in the area. She applies this three-fold typology of creation, original sin, the flood, Abraham, Moses ... building a very solid foundation of Biblical and liturgical knowledge in an easy to understanding way. Along with way a variety of other Bible interpretation topics are explored - literary genre, document theory, form criticism - explored in sufficient detail to make the necessary points in language clear enough to be accessible to a very broad audience. This is truly a book to rave about.

Hollywood Cowboy
Published in Hardcover by Arena Editions (May, 2002)
Authors: Paul Jasmin, Grazia D'Annunzio, and Sofia Coppola
Average review score:

Dreamy & Very Moody!
This is a beautiful book! I was so anxious to see Paul Jasmin's long-awaited first book, having recently heard so much about this remarkable photographer. Over the years, I have researched many photographers, but wasn't familiar with Paul's work at all. Well, I now have another favorite photographer. These are stunningly seductive, moody, romantic, and erotic images, to name only a few feelings that came to me while viewing this sampling of his work. These images are taken from the 1950's right up to 2001. A great selection that covers male and female nudes, portraits of friends, people of the entertainment & art world, fashion shoots and peaceful travel images.

Jasmin states, "I still dream in the 1950's", well, lucky for us. You get a feeling from these photographs that you don't get from the current photographers images, and that's a feeling of innocence. A time when sex was more innocent and much more sensual. A long time friend of Bruce Weber, you can see the influence in a few of these photos. Paul Jasmin have appeared in many leading fashion magazines such as Arena, Vogue, W, and L'uomo Vogue. There are three informative and touching essays by Sofia Coppola, Grazia D'Annunzio, and critic Nicolai Ouroussoff. They help to highlight & explain Jasmin's life and career. Arena Editions has again published another striking book on quality paper, that is handsomely designed.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a photographer who exposes us to a time that is now lost, a time of innocence and youthful carefree ways. I really enjoyed this collection of his images. Highly Recommended!

El Mundo de Sofia
Published in Paperback by Siruela (01 January, 1994)
Author: Jostein Gaarder
Average review score:

Sofia's Heart (American Dreams)
Published in Paperback by Flare (November, 1996)
Author: Sharon Cadwallader
Average review score:

Only okay.
This book was ok but not as good as some of the other American Dreams. It was pretty good though. It is about Sofia, a Spanish-Californian girl living in the 1840s.

good or stupid?
I thought this book was stupid, but i've read it twice. Sofia manages to capture Antonio's heart and also his best friends. I won't tell you the ending, but it was sad and happy at the same time. I liked it but as i said it was kinda dumb.

I love this book so much!!!
I have read other books in the American Dreams collection, but this would have to be one of my favorites. Sofia DuFay is in love with a man that loves her back, but do to his snobby family, she knows there love wasnt meant to be. So she decides to forget him, but through time she realizes she cant. Do to an unforuantate(sp??) tragedy, she is left broke and decides to start a new life. All the time she still thinks of the young man and there forbidden romance. I dont want to tell the ending, so I will keep quiet, BUT THIS BOOK IS ONE YOU CANT PUT DOWN!!!
